Fire safety guide

What happens during a fire safety inspection in Ireland?

Fire authorities in Ireland have statutory inspection powers in relevant circumstances, and the Fire Services Act 1981 places duties on persons having control of certain premises to take reasonable measures in relation to fire safety. What applies to a particular premises is a matter for the relevant authority or a suitably qualified professional.

The general legal background

The Fire Services Act 1981 is the principal legislation in this area. It places duties on persons having control of certain premises in relation to fire safety, and provides for inspection by authorised persons in relevant circumstances.

This guide does not interpret those duties for your premises. The text of the Act is available from the Irish Statute Book, and standards are published by NSAI.

Why fire alarm records come up

Whatever the circumstances of a visit or a request, documentation is the part a business controls in advance. Servicing records and the certification issued with them show what has been done to the alarm system and when.

If those records cannot be produced, the status of the system is unknown, and that is the least comfortable position to be in.

Sensible preparation

  • Know when the fire alarm system was last serviced
  • Keep the servicing records and certification together
  • Know whether the system is monitored
  • Clear or understand anything previously reported as outstanding
  • Know who to call for a copy of the documentation

What we will not tell you

We will not tell you that any supplier, including ADS Group, can guarantee an inspection outcome, and we will not state what your premises is legally required to do. FirePulse covers the monitored fire alarm, its servicing and the relevant servicing certification.
