What is a monitored fire alarm?
A monitored fire alarm is a fire alarm system connected to a monitoring centre, so that an activation is signalled rather than depending solely on somebody being present to hear the sounder.
Monitored and unmonitored systems
An unmonitored system detects and sounds. If people are in the building, that is how they are alerted. If the premises is closed, the alarm depends on somebody nearby hearing it and deciding to act.
A monitored system does the same detection and sounding, and also signals the activation to a monitoring centre.
Why it matters for a small premises
Most small commercial premises are closed for more hours in the week than they are open. A shop, a salon or a surgery is empty overnight, at weekends and over holidays.
That is the period where the difference between a sounder and a monitored system is largest, because there is nobody inside to respond.
Questions worth asking a supplier
Before agreeing anything, it is reasonable to ask:
- Is the system monitored, or does it only sound on site?
- What happens when it activates outside business hours?
- Is monitoring included in the monthly figure, or invoiced separately?
- Who holds the servicing records for the system?
