Fire safety guide

What is I.S. 3218:2024?

I.S. 3218 is the Irish Standard for fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings, published by NSAI. The 2024 designation refers to the current published edition. The standard is the technical reference used for the design, installation, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of these systems.

What the standard is for

Standards exist so that systems are designed, installed and maintained to a consistent technical reference rather than to each installer's preference.

I.S. 3218 is that reference in Ireland for fire detection and fire alarm systems in buildings. It is published by NSAI, and the full text is available from NSAI rather than reproduced here.

What it means for a business owner

You are not expected to read the standard. What is worth knowing is that a competent supplier works to it and can say what has been done to your system and when.

Standards are revised over time, so a system installed a long time ago was designed against the edition current at that point. That is a reason to have an older system looked at rather than a reason to assume anything about it.

Questions to ask

  • What standard is the work carried out to?
  • What documentation will I be issued, and when?
  • Who holds the servicing records for my system?
  • If the system is older, what would need to change?
